El Trasgu de Foncebadón

Foncebadón sits at around 1,500 metres above sea level in the mountains of León, making it one of the highest points on the Camino Francés before the descent to Ponferrada. For much of the 20th century the village was almost completely abandoned, a ghost town of crumbling stone houses and overgrown lanes. The revival of the Camino de Santiago from the 1980s onwards brought walkers back through, and gradually Foncebadón itself came back to life around the pilgrim trade.

El Trasgu de Foncebadón is one of the guest houses that has grown out of that revival. The name references the Trasgu, a mischievous household spirit from the folklore of Asturias and the broader northern Spanish tradition, a nod to the region's deep-rooted mythology. The property offers family rooms with private bathrooms, mountain or garden views, and a restaurant serving Spanish and local cuisine with options for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets. There is also a bar, minimarket, sun terrace, garden, and massage services, which makes it more comprehensively equipped than most stops at this altitude.

The location matters for walkers because Foncebadón sits just a kilometre or two below the Cruz de Ferro, the Iron Cross, one of the most symbolically significant points on the entire Camino. Pilgrims traditionally carry a stone from home and leave it at the base of the cross. Staying in Foncebadón means you can reach the cross early in the morning before the day's foot traffic builds, which for many walkers makes the moment considerably more affecting.
