Albergue San Antón Abad

The albergue at Calle Hospital 4 occupies a building with deep roots in the pilgrimage tradition of Villafranca Montes de Oca. The structure dates to the 14th century, when it functioned as a hospital for pilgrims making their way along the Camino Francés. Villafranca Montes de Oca was historically an important stopping point before the demanding climb through the oak forests of the Montes de Oca, and institutions like this one were essential for sheltering and caring for travellers who had often walked long distances in difficult conditions.

Today the building is managed by the adjacent three-star Hotel San Antón Abad, which gives the hostel a more comfortable infrastructure than many pilgrim-only albergues. Pilgrims check in at the hotel reception rather than a separate hostel desk. The dormitory accommodation is spread across large shared rooms holding between 8 and 19 beds, with a total of 49 dormitory places alongside three private rooms. A bar-restaurant with a set menu is available on site, which is a practical bonus given that Villafranca Montes de Oca is a small settlement with limited dining options.

The albergue is open from mid-March to mid-November, reflecting the seasonal nature of Camino traffic through this stretch of the route. It sits at the exit of the village, making it a logical overnight stop before tackling the long, forested stage toward Burgos.
