Las Donas Del Portazgo

Las Doñas del Portazgo is an 18th-century mansion turned boutique hotel in the heart of Villafranca del Bierzo, one of the most historically layered stopping points on the Camino Francés. The building's age fits naturally into its surroundings: Villafranca itself is a medieval town that once served as a significant waypoint for pilgrims, home to the Church of Santiago where, in centuries past, those too ill to continue could receive the same indulgences granted at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela simply by touching the Puerta del Perdón.

The hotel's name references the portazgo, a toll historically charged to travellers and merchants passing through. That commercial and pilgrimage history is still legible in the town's architecture and street layout. The mansion has been restored with care, and its rooms are individually decorated, lending the place a more personal feel than a standard hotel. Modern amenities including hydromassage showers and satellite TV sit alongside period details.

The reception team can arrange visits to local wineries in the El Bierzo appellation, a wine region producing distinctive reds from the Mencía grape that has gained considerable recognition in recent decades. The broader area also rewards exploration: the Roman gold mines of Las Médulas, roughly 30 kilometres south, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most dramatic landscapes in northwest Spain, shaped almost entirely by Roman hydraulic engineering in the first centuries CE.
