Pilgrim Hostel of Deba

Albergue Geltokia is a pilgrim-only hostel in Deba, a coastal town in the Basque Country that serves as a popular overnight stop on the Camino del Norte (also known as the Camino de la Costa). The hostel is run entirely by volunteers from the Asociación de Amigos de los Caminos a Santiago de Deba, a non-profit founded in 2004 whose work includes waymarking the route through the area and welcoming pilgrims arriving on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback.

The hostel has space for 56 pilgrims across four dormitory rooms of varying sizes, ranging from 8 to 20 beds. Facilities include bathrooms, Wi-Fi, a common room, a laundry area with washing machine and dryer, a large terrace at the entrance, and a secure space for bicycles. There is no kitchen. A suggested solidarity contribution of 8 euros helps cover running costs.

To stay here, pilgrims need to register in person at Deba's tourist office and collect an access code. No reservations are accepted. A credencial with stamps showing a logical sequence of progress toward Deba is required, and stays are limited to one night. Walkers have priority; cyclists and e-bike riders are admitted from 7pm and 7:15pm respectively, space permitting. Groups of seven or more are asked to wait until 7:30pm for check-in, and are encouraged to seek alternative accommodation.

The association's volunteer hospitality is offered in a spirit of solidarity rather than obligation, and the hostel rules reflect that ethic: guests are expected to arrive respectfully, care for the facilities, keep quiet after 10:30pm, and leave by 8:30am.
