About San Bol

San Bol is one of the more quietly remarkable stops on the meseta section of the Camino Francés, tucked into a shallow valley about 250 meters off the main path and roughly 5.5 kilometers beyond Hornillos del Camino. The surrounding plateau is famously exposed and featureless, which makes the sudden dip into this sheltered hollow feel almost like a mirage.

The site takes its name from a medieval hermitage dedicated to San Baudilio, a third-century martyr venerated across parts of northern Spain. The hermitage no longer stands in any substantial form, but the site has drawn pilgrims for centuries, functioning as a waypoint and resting place long before the modern Camino revival.

What keeps walkers stopping here today is the spring. The Arroyo de San Bol is fed by a natural cold-water source that remains strikingly frigid even in summer heat, and the tradition of sitting down to soak tired feet in the stream has become one of those small rituals the meseta is otherwise too sparse to offer. A modest refuge operates seasonally on the site, providing basic rest and refreshment. The detour from the main path is short, but the valley feels genuinely removed from the open plateau above, and many pilgrims find the stop unexpectedly restorative, both physically and in terms of the brief sense of shelter it provides during an otherwise demanding and exposed stretch of walking.
