About Villafranca del Bierzo
Villafranca del Bierzo sits in the province of Leon at the confluence of the rivers Burbia and Valcarce, at the western edge of the El Bierzo region. It is the last major town before the second great mountain crossing of the Camino Frances, the climb up to O Cebreiro and into Galicia. The Camino enters Villafranca past the Iglesia de Santiago and runs through the heart of the medieval town.
Villafranca del Bierzo, meaning Frank Town of El Bierzo, was founded in the 11th century by Cluniac monks from France. Its name reflects its origins: this was a town of French settlers and a monastic foundation directly tied to the Order of Cluny, the same Benedictine reform movement that transformed Sahagun further east. The town became a key pilgrim staging point on the Camino because of its position at the foot of the Galician mountains, and remains a primary overnight stop on this stage.
Sick or exhausted pilgrims who could go no further were able to enter the Iglesia de Santiago at the entrance to town through the Puerta del Perdon, the Door of Pardon, and receive the same full plenary indulgence given to pilgrims who reached Santiago de Compostela. This is the only place on the Camino where the indulgence can be granted short of Santiago itself, and in Holy Years the door is fully opened. The Convento de San Francisco was, by local tradition, founded by Saint Francis of Assisi himself when he walked the Camino to Santiago in 1214. The Convento de la Anunciada is a still-active Clarissan convent founded in the 17th century. The Castillo de los Marqueses, a heavy stone castle built by the Marquises of Villafranca in the 15th century, dominates the upper town.
Villafranca has the full range of services. There are albergues including the Albergue Ave Fenix (a long-running pilgrim albergue founded by the late Jato family) and the municipal albergue, alongside private albergues, hotels, hostales, restaurants, cafes, bars, supermarkets, a pharmacy, ATMs, and medical care. The town has bus connections to Ponferrada and beyond.
