About Hontanas
Hontanas is a small village in Burgos province on the Camino Francés, between Hornillos del Camino and Castrojeriz. For pilgrims, it is a welcome overnight or rest stop after a long open stretch across the Meseta.
The village name is linked to fountains or springs, which makes sense in a place where water mattered to travellers crossing the dry plateau. Hontanas has been a pilgrim stop for centuries, and its main sight is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, originally Gothic and later altered over time. The village is also known for its unusual arrival: it sits hidden in a shallow valley and appears almost suddenly after kilometres of open fields.
Hontanas has good pilgrim services for its size. It has albergues, places to eat and drink, accommodation, and basic facilities. It is much smaller than Burgos or Castrojeriz, but it works well as a classic Camino overnight stop.
The must-do is simply to enjoy the arrival and the village atmosphere. After a long Meseta walk, Hontanas feels like a small reward: stone houses, a church tower, pilgrim bars, and a sheltered place to rest before continuing toward Castrojeriz.
