O Pedrouzo → Santiago de Compostela

The last day. Most pilgrims leave before dawn, walking through eucalyptus forest in darkness with headlamps, the beams catching the mist between the trees. There is no practical reason to start this early unless you want to arrive for the midday pilgram mass at the cathedral.

The distance is short and the terrain is easy. But something pulls you out of bed. After weeks or months of walking, the body knows what to do. You want to arrive.

The first 10 km pass through forest and the small villages of Amenal and Cimadevila. At Lavacolla, the route crosses a stream where medieval pilgrims ritually washed themselves before entering the holy city. The name itself likely derives from the Latin lavamentula, a washing of less dignified body parts than the face. The tradition is mostly forgotten now, but the stream still runs and a few pilgrims still pause here. Beyond Lavacolla, the path climbs gently through the campus of a television station and up to the Monte do Gozo, the Hill of Joy. This is where medieval pilgrims caught their first glimpse of the cathedral spires and wept, fell to their knees, or shouted with relief. The view today is partially blocked by modern development, but the twin spires are visible in the distance, and the emotional weight of the moment is unchanged. A monument to the pilgrimage and a large pilgrim hostel mark the hilltop.

The descent from Monte do Gozo into Santiago passes through suburbs, roundabouts, and ordinary city streets. The surroundings are nothing special so you will barely notice them. The old town closes in around you gradually: the buildings become granite, the streets become narrow, and brass scallop shells embedded in the pavement guide your final steps. You pass through the tunnel beneath the Pazo de Raxoi, emerge into the archway, and the Praza do Obradoiro opens up before you. The Cathedral is there. The Baroque facade fills the western sky. Around you, other pilgrims are arriving, sitting on the stone ground, some in tears, some laughing, some calling home, some simply staring.

There is no correct way to feel. Sit down. Look up. Let it settle. You did it!

The Compostela certificate is collected at the Pilgrim Office on Rua das Carretas, a short walk from the Cathedral. Pre-register online a day or two before to reduce the queue. The pilgrim mass is held daily at noon. During the service, the nationalities and starting towns of pilgrims who arrived the previous day are read aloud. Hearing your own starting town called out in the Cathedral, after everything you have walked to get here, is a moment you will not forget. You have arrived.
