About This Stage
A pleasant stage through the Bierzo valley, one of the most scenic sections of the Frances. The route follows the river through a landscape of vineyards, orchards, and chestnut groves, with a notably milder climate than the Meseta or mountains.
The walking is gentle and the Bierzo's lush vegetation provides welcome shade and variety. The small town of Cacabelos, roughly midway, has good cafes and a wine culture that reflects the region's growing reputation. The approach to Villafranca follows the river valley.
Villafranca del Bierzo is a charming small town at the foot of the mountains. Its Church of Santiago has a famous 'Door of Forgiveness' (Puerta del Perdon), where medieval pilgrims too ill to continue could receive the same indulgence as reaching Santiago. The town has good accommodation and restaurants and marks the last stop before the climb to O Cebreiro.
Terrain: Urban exit, vineyard paths, riverside trails, valley floor walking
