About Columbrianos

Fuentes Nuevas sits in the province of Leon, on the western suburban fringe of Ponferrada. The Camino runs through the village along the main road. The setting is the broad, low valley of the river Cua, with the vineyards of El Bierzo beginning to appear on either side of the road.

The village name simply means New Fountains, a reference to the medieval drinking fountains that once stood on the village's edges and served pilgrims, drovers, and locals. The Ermita del Divino Cristo, a small Baroque hermitage, anchors the village. The setting today is more peri-urban than rural, with Ponferrada steadily expanding westward.

Services are limited. There are bar-restaurants and a small shop. There is no albergue in the village itself, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
