About Campo

Campo sits in the province of León, in the El Bierzo region, on the Camino's final approach into Ponferrada from the east. The village is about 3.6 kilometres from the centre of Ponferrada and is technically part of the Ponferrada municipality, but it retains the character of a separate village. The Camino runs through the heart of Campo along the Calle Real, the medieval royal road.
Campo has a long history. Local sources trace the original core of the village to a place called El Castro, suggesting a pre-Roman Celtic hillfort, and Roman-period remains survive in the village to this day. The most visible Roman trace is a small vaulted fountain or cistern set into the wall along the Calle Real, the medieval Camino road through the village. The Calle Real itself is lined with manor houses bearing the coats of arms of the local Lunas and Villaboa families, who held property here in the late medieval and early modern periods. The parish church of San Blas, 17th-18th century, sits on a hill at the edge of the village. The smaller Capilla del Santo Cristo, in the village square, dates from the 18th century. A roadside cross on the way into Campo commemorates a pilgrim who died here in 2005.
Services in Campo are limited. There are bar-restaurants. There is no albergue, no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM. Most pilgrims pass straight through on the way into Ponferrada, a short walk further west.
