About Ruitelán

Ruitelan sits in the province of Leon in the Valcarce valley, between Vega de Valcarce and Las Herrerias. The Camino passes through the village on the road climbing toward the Galician mountains.

The village is named after Saint Froilan, the 9th-century bishop of Leon, who was born nearby in 832 and according to local tradition lived as a hermit in the surrounding hills before becoming bishop. A small hermitage dedicated to the saint stands in the village. Ruitelan is small and has remained so since the Middle Ages.

Services are limited. There is an albergue, the Albergue Pequeno Potala, and a bar. There is no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
