Villava

Villava, officially Villava / Atarrabia, is a town in Navarra on the Camino Francés, just after La Trinidad de Arre and before Burlada and Pamplona.

The town was founded in 1184 by King Sancho VI of Navarra, also known as Sancho the Wise. For centuries it was a small settlement on the approach to Pamplona, but it grew significantly in the 20th century and is now part of the wider urban area around the city.

For pilgrims, Villava marks the point where the Camino becomes more urban. After the medieval bridge and basilica at Trinidad de Arre, the route continues through Villava’s streets toward Burlada and then Pamplona. The walking is mostly flat and straightforward from here.

Villava is practical rather than scenic. Pilgrims can usually find cafés, bars, shops, pharmacies, ATMs, and other services much more easily than in the smaller villages earlier in the stage. It can be a useful place to stop for breakfast, coffee, supplies, or a short rest before the final stretch into Pamplona.

The town is also known as the birthplace of cyclist Miguel Induráin, one of Spain’s most famous athletes and a five-time Tour de France winner. For most pilgrims, though, Villava’s main value is simple: it is the transition from rural Camino villages into the suburbs and city life of Pamplona.
