Fene

Fene sits on the southern shore of the Ferrol ría and is best known as a shipbuilding town. The ASTANO yards, which boomed in the 1960s and 70s, became part of the state shipbuilder Navantia in 2000, and cranes still frame the view across the water. The municipality's roots go back much further, with a hillfort at Río Castro and Palaeolithic remains recorded at Maniños beach.

Pilgrims reach the centre after a scenic hillside approach from Neda, then cross the busy N-651 at traffic lights by the modern town hall. Fene has all the everyday services you might need. From here the Camino begins its climb into the low hills that separate the Ferrol and Ares rías, on a mix of paved lanes and stony tracks that run beside the AP-9 motorway for a stretch. Arrows under the motorway viaduct can be confusing, so stay on the same wide track you arrived on.
