About This Stage
A short but steep stage that climbs significantly out of the Lima River valley into the hills approaching the Spanish border. Despite the modest distance, the nearly 900 metres of elevation gain makes this one of the most physically challenging days on the route.
The path climbs through eucalyptus and pine forests with increasingly panoramic views back over the Lima valley. The higher sections pass through a landscape of granite boulders, heather, and gorse that feels distinctly mountainous. On clear days, the views are exceptional.
Rubiaes is a tiny hilltop hamlet with very limited services. Accommodation is minimal and must be booked in advance. A small cafe may be open, but pilgrims should carry food and water for this stage. The village's isolation is part of its charm, offering a quiet evening high in the hills.
Terrain: Steep forest climbs, rocky mountain paths, granite village lanes, exposed ridgeline sections
