Stage 18 of 25

Barcelos → Ponte de Lima

33.5 km | 8-11 hours | +750m / -779m

About This Stage

The longest stage in the Minho region crosses deeply rural countryside through dense forests and traditional granite villages. The terrain is consistently hilly with no flat sections to speak of, making this a physically demanding day despite the relatively good path surfaces.

The route passes through the heart of vinho verde country, with vineyards trained on tall granite posts lining the path. Small Romanesque chapels and wayside crosses appear frequently, reminding pilgrims that this path has been walked for centuries. Villages along the way offer water and occasional cafes.

Ponte de Lima is one of the most beautiful towns on the entire Camino Portugues. Portugal's oldest town (chartered in 1125), it sits on the Lima River, crossed by a medieval bridge that pilgrims have used since the 14th century. The town has excellent accommodation, charming riverside restaurants, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a favourite overnight stop.

Terrain: Forest trails, undulating rural paths, granite village lanes, riverside approach
