About This Stage
The walk out of Porto is a gradual transition from city to countryside. The route leaves the cathedral area and heads north through Porto's residential neighbourhoods, passing through Matosinhos (where the Central and Coastal routes split) before continuing inland through increasingly rural terrain.
Once clear of the Porto metropolitan area, the landscape opens into a patchwork of small farms, vineyards, and granite villages. This stage is where the Central route takes on its characteristic northern Portuguese character, with narrow lanes winding between stone walls and shaded by ancient trees.
Vilarinho is a small rural village with limited services. Accommodation options are few and should be booked ahead, especially in peak season. A small cafe or restaurant may be available, but do not count on extensive services.
Terrain: Urban cobblestones, suburban roads, rural paths, granite village streets
