Vilarinho → Barcelos

Entering the Minho, Portugal's greenest and most lush region, this stage rolls through a landscape of vinho verde vineyards, granite villages, and dense woodland. The terrain is constantly undulating with frequent short climbs and descents that accumulate significant elevation over the day.

The Minho's distinctive agricultural landscape features raised granite granaries (espigueiros), vine-covered pergolas, and small family farms. The path passes through a series of charming hamlets where life moves at a pace far removed from the cities. Water is abundant, with fountains and streams appearing regularly.

Barcelos is a beautiful market town on the Cavado River, famous for the Galo de Barcelos (Barcelos Rooster), Portugal's unofficial national symbol. The Thursday market is one of the largest in Europe and has been running since the Middle Ages. Good accommodation, restaurants, and services are available throughout the town.
