About A Fonsagrada

A Fonsagrada is the first significant town in Galicia on the Camino Primitivo, and it has the reputation of being one of the wettest places in Spain. The town sits on a plateau and serves as a market hub for the surrounding farming communities.

Pilgrims will find albergues, hotels, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, ATMs, and a pharmacy. The town has a Monday market and a traditional Galician atmosphere.

The transition from Asturias into Galicia is marked by a shift in language (to Galician), architecture (granite replacing sandstone), and landscape (even greener, if possible). Waterproof gear is essential on this stretch.

Things to Do in A Fonsagrada

History

Visit the Fons Sacrata

The sacred fountain that gives the town its name sits in the centre, near the Church of Santa Maria. According to Camino legend, the Apostle James turned the fountain's water into milk to feed a poor widow's children. The fountain is modest, but its significance to the town and the route is deep. The Church of Santa Maria beside it is also worth entering for a moment of quiet reflection after a long stage.

Food & Drink

Try Butelo con Cocido

A Fonsagrada is known for its butelo, a local sausage made from pork ribs and other cuts, smoked and then cooked as part of a cocido (a rich stew with potatoes, greens, and other meats). It is a hearty mountain dish designed for cold weather and hard work, which describes most days on the Primitivo. The town's restaurants also serve excellent octopus, especially on weekends when visitors come from surrounding villages.

Food & Drink

Try the Pastel da Fonsagrada

The town has its own traditional pastry, the Pastel da Fonsagrada, a sweet treat sold in the local bakeries. After nearly a week of mountain walking, the sugar and the novelty are both welcome. Buy one with your afternoon coffee and sit in the main square. You are in Galicia now. The landscape and the food are changing.

Sightseeing

Visit the Ethnographic Museum

A Fonsagrada has a small ethnographic museum on Calle Rosalia de Castro, opened in 1984 by local residents. The museum is housed in a three-storey building and documents the traditional trades and rural life of the region. The collection is modest but genuinely interesting, offering a window into the mountain communities that have lived in these hills for generations.

Camino Moment

Welcome to Galicia

A Fonsagrada is your first night in Galicia. You crossed the border at the Alto del Acebo today, and from here the Camino Primitivo runs through the green heart of Galicia to Lugo and then on to Santiago. The hardest mountain stages are behind you. The terrain ahead is still hilly but less extreme. The character of the route is shifting. Enjoy the change and notice the small differences: the language, the architecture, the food, the light.
