About This Stage
The route crosses from Asturias into Galicia at the Alto do Acebo, the natural mountain border between the two regions. The ascent passes through increasingly exposed terrain, with the vegetation shifting from chestnut and oak forest to mountain scrub and heath. Views from the summit look back across the Asturian mountains and forward into the green Galician highlands.
The landscape change at the border is immediate: the Atlantic influence becomes stronger, the green becomes more intense, and the air carries a dampness that will be familiar for the rest of the Camino.
A Fonsagrada is a small Galician mountain town that claims to be the starting point of the oldest documented Camino pilgrimage. Try the local pulpo a feira.
Terrain: Mountain climb, exposed terrain, Asturias-Galicia border crossing, highland paths
