About This Stage
The route leaves Salas through its cobbled historic centre and begins a sustained climb through forest towards La Espina. The ascent is about eleven kilometres of continuous climbing through magical forest paths of oak, chestnut, and hazel. The walking is not technically difficult but requires fitness and patience.
At La Espina, a crossroads village where a medieval pilgrim hostel once stood, there is a link path to the Camino de la Costa. The final section from La Espina descends through La Pereda to Tineo.
In 1222, King Alfonso IX decreed that the Camino must pass through Tineo, under penalty of severe punishment. The 13th-century Iglesia de San Pedro houses the Museo de Arte Sacro with sculptures from Romanesque to Baroque periods. The Palacio de Meras (now a hotel) contains a collection of antique clocks, silver, and weapons. Look for the Ermita de San Roque at the entrance to town.
Terrain: Steep cobbled climb, sustained forest ascent, rural paths, hilltop town approach
