About Tineo (Tinéu)

Tineo is one of the oldest and most historically significant stops on the Camino Primitivo, the original route walked by King Alfonso II in the 9th century. Its importance was formalized in 1222 when Alfonso IX issued a decree requiring pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela to pass through the town, cementing its place in the camino's official geography and ensuring it developed the infrastructure to serve travelers for centuries.

The town sits in a broad valley in inland Asturias, surrounded by forested hills and the kind of slow-moving agricultural landscape that has changed relatively little over the centuries. The pace here reflects that continuity. Tineo is a working Asturian market town rather than a tourist destination, which gives it an authenticity that pilgrims often find more grounding than the more visited stops further along the route.

The Monastery of San Francisco, founded in the 15th century and still standing in the town center, is worth a visit. The noble families of Asturias, including the powerful Merás and Tineo lineages, left their mark on the town's architecture, and several coats of arms carved into stone facades are visible around the older streets. The Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Tineo also reflects the town's medieval ecclesiastical weight.

For pilgrims, Tineo typically marks the end of a demanding stage crossing the mountains from Salas or Campiello. The combination of a hot meal, a municipal albergue, and the knowledge that Alfonso IX himself thought this place worth stopping at makes for a satisfying overnight.

Things to Do in Tineo (Tinéu)

Food & Drink

Try Chosco de Tineo

Chosco is a local smoked sausage unique to Tineo, made with pork, garlic, paprika, and spices, then smoked over oak wood. It has its own protected quality designation and the town is fiercely proud of it. Most restaurants in Tineo serve it, often as part of a larger Asturian meal with fabada (bean stew), cheese, and cider. It is smoky, rich, and delicious.

History

Visit the Monasterio de Obona (Detour)

A short detour off the main Camino path leads to the Monasterio de Santa Maria la Real de Obona, founded in the 8th century. King Alfonso II declared it an obligatory stop for pilgrims on the original route. The monastery is partly ruined but the Romanesque church survives, and inside there is a remarkable carved wooden crucifix that experts consider one of the greatest medieval sculptures in northwestern Spain. The detour adds a few kilometres but is well worth it.

Relaxation

Enjoy the Mountain Views

Tineo sits on a plateau at 680 metres. From several viewpoints around the town, you can see the mountains stretching away in every direction. The valley below is green and deep, and on clear days the views extend for many kilometres. After the effort of the climb from Salas, stand at one of these viewpoints and appreciate where you are. You are now in the heart of the Asturian mountains.

Sightseeing

See the Palacio de los Meras

The Palace of Meras is a stately historic building in the centre of Tineo, set within a small park. It was recently restored in keeping with its original features and represents the traditional architecture of the Asturian nobility. The building and its grounds are pleasant to walk through and offer a glimpse of the wealth that once flowed through this mountain town.

Food & Drink

Eat Fabada Asturiana

You are in the heartland of fabada, the rich bean and sausage stew that is the national dish of Asturias. The version served in Tineo's restaurants is hearty, thick, and made with locally cured meats including chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and lacón (cured pork shoulder). On a cool mountain evening after a day of climbing, there is no better meal. Order a full pot to share.
