About This Stage
The path crosses the Causse de Gramat, the distinctive dry limestone plateau of the Quercy region. The landscape is characterised by thin soils, low scrubby vegetation, stone walls, and occasional dolmens left by prehistoric inhabitants. The walking has a meditative quality through this sparsely populated terrain.
Watch for the gariotes, small circular stone shelters built by shepherds that dot the causse. The limestone is riddled with underground rivers and caves. Truffles grow in the oak woodland, and in winter this area is one of France's truffle capitals.
Cajarc sits on the Lot River in a sheltered valley, a welcome contrast to the austere plateau above.
Terrain: Limestone plateau paths, wooded valleys, causse (dry limestone plateau) walking, some paved roads
