Stage 14 of 29

Limogne-en-Quercy → Cahors

39.5 km | 9-12 hours | +167m / -141m

About This Stage

The route crosses the causse before descending to Cahors through the Lot valley. The walk is long but the terrain is flat, and the approach to Cahors reveals the medieval city spread along a loop of the Lot River.

The Pont Valentre is Cahors' masterpiece: a 14th-century fortified bridge with three towers that is one of the finest medieval bridges in Europe. Legend says the builder made a pact with the devil, who was tricked out of his payment. A small carved devil on one of the towers commemorates the story. The town has a remarkable 12th-century cathedral with the largest Romanesque dome in France.

Cahors gives its name to the local Malbec wine, a deep, dark red that has been produced here since Roman times.

Terrain: Flat causse paths, gentle descent into Lot valley, riverside approach, city cobblestones
