About This Stage
The route crosses the remote Margeride highlands through the ancient territory of the Gevaudan. The landscape is open and windswept, with granite villages, pine forests, and vast upland pastures where Aubrac cattle graze. The isolation on this section can be profound.
The Domaine du Sauvage, a remarkable isolated gite roughly halfway, sits alone in the wilderness and has sheltered pilgrims for centuries. The building is a converted medieval hospice surrounded by nothing but moorland and sky.
Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole is a small granite town on the edge of the Margeride, with a 12th-century castle and a railway station that feels like a relic from another era.
Terrain: Exposed highland plateau, forest trails, rocky paths, rural roads, some paved sections
