About Alhandra

Alhandra is a small riverside town on the eastern bank of the Tagus, about 30 kilometres northeast of Lisbon. It sits at the foot of the Serra do Serves hills, and that geography gave it a role in one of the more decisive moments in the Peninsular War.

In 1810, the Duke of Wellington selected the ridgeline above Alhandra as the eastern anchor of the Lines of Torres Vedras, the extraordinary network of fortifications he ordered built in secret to halt Napoleon's forces. The lines stretched from this point on the Tagus all the way to the Atlantic coast, a distance of roughly 50 kilometres. The eastern end at Alhandra was deliberately positioned to exploit the steep, heavily wooded terrain and the river itself as natural barriers. When Massena's army advanced and encountered the lines in October 1810, they found them effectively impassable. The French stalled, supplies ran out, and they eventually retreated without taking Lisbon. The lines are considered a masterpiece of military engineering and a turning point in the war. Remnants of the fortifications remain visible in the hills above the town.

Alhandra also has a quieter but notable historical distinction as the birthplace of Afonso de Albuquerque, born around 1453 in the village of Alhandra or its immediate surroundings. Albuquerque went on to become one of the most consequential figures in the Age of Discovery, serving as Governor of Portuguese India and systematically building Portugal's commercial and military dominance across the Indian Ocean. He captured Goa, Malacca, and Hormuz, establishing a network of strategic ports that underpinned the Estado da India for generations. His methods were often brutal, but his strategic vision reshaped global trade routes. The connection between this quiet Tagus-side town and the architect of a seaborne empire is one of those historical contrasts that rewards a moment's reflection.
