About Alverca do Ribatejo
Alverca do Ribatejo sits on the right bank of the Tagus River about 25 kilometres northeast of Lisbon, and its history is closely tied to both the river and the sky. The town grew up as a river crossing point and agricultural settlement in the fertile Ribatejo floodplain, but its modern identity was shaped largely by aviation. In 1916, one of Portugal's earliest military airfields was established here, and the town became a centre for aircraft maintenance and production for much of the twentieth century. The state-owned OGMA aircraft maintenance company, founded in 1918, remains one of the largest employers in the region and gave Alverca an industrial character distinct from the rural towns around it.
The Air Museum (Museu do Ar) is the standout attraction for visitors. Housed on the grounds of the old air base, it holds one of the most significant collections of historic aircraft in Portugal, including early military planes, jet fighters, and helicopters spanning decades of Portuguese aviation history. The museum traces the country's involvement in flight from its earliest days and includes artefacts connected to pioneering Portuguese aviators.
The town also has a modest historic centre with a parish church dating to the sixteenth century, though much of Alverca's urban fabric reflects the twentieth-century expansion that accompanied industrialisation. For pilgrims and walkers following routes along the Tagus corridor toward Lisbon or heading north through the Ribatejo, Alverca offers practical services and a chance to pause in a town that tells a less-told story of Portuguese industrial and military heritage.
