About Atapuerca

Atapuerca is a small village near the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site of the same name, where some of the earliest human remains in Europe (dating back over 800,000 years) were discovered.

The village has cafes, a small albergue, and basic services. The archaeological site itself is a short detour from the Camino route and can be visited with a guided tour.

For pilgrims interested in prehistory and human evolution, Atapuerca is a compelling detour. The Museum of Human Evolution in nearby Burgos provides fuller context for the discoveries.

The caves and excavations here contain the oldest known human remains in Europe, dating back over 800,000 years. Guided tours of the excavation sites run from the visitor centre in the nearby village of Ibeas de Juarros (a short taxi ride). Book in advance during summer as tours fill up quickly.
