About Cardeñuela Riopico
Cardeñuela Riopico is a small village in Burgos province on the Camino Francés, between Atapuerca and Orbaneja Riopico. For pilgrims, it is a useful stop before the final approach to Burgos, especially if you want to break up the stage and enter the city fresh the next day.
The village sits in the Río Pico valley, close to the edge of the Burgos urban area. Its name is linked to Cárdena, and local sources note that it was once distinguished as “Val de Orbaneja” before becoming known as Riopico. The area developed during the repopulation of lands around Burgos from the late 9th century onward, after the city of Burgos was founded.
Cardeñuela Riopico has useful but limited pilgrim services. It has albergues and food options, but it does not have a pharmacy, ATM, supermarket, butcher, or full range of shops, so pilgrims should plan accordingly.
The important decision after this area is how to enter Burgos. The road route via Villafría is direct but can be dull and industrial, while the riverside route through Castañares and along the Arlanzón River is usually the more pleasant option.
