About Conques

Conques is one of the undisputed highlights of Le Chemin du Puy and one of the most beautiful medieval villages in all of France. The village clusters around the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture whose tympanum depicting the Last Judgement is one of the most important works of medieval sculpture in Europe.

The abbey's treasure includes the Majeste de Sainte Foy, a gold reliquary studded with precious stones. In 1994, Pierre Soulages designed contemporary stained glass windows for the church, creating a remarkable dialogue between medieval and modern art.

Conques is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an official 'Plus Beaux Villages de France'. Pilgrims will find gites, hotels, restaurants, and basic services. The village is small and tourism-oriented, so booking ahead in peak season is advisable.

Things to Do in Conques

History

See the Tympanum of the Last Judgement

The carved semicircular panel above the main door of the Abbaye Sainte-Foy is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture. Carved in the 12th century and still showing traces of the original paint, the tympanum depicts Christ at the centre, with the saved ascending to Paradise on his right and the damned being dragged to Hell on his left. The detail is astonishing. The damned are shown being devoured, tortured, and humiliated with a vivid, almost gleeful imagination. The saved, by contrast,

Enter the Abbey

The interior of the Abbaye Sainte-Foy is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. The vaulted nave, the carved capitals, and the ambulatory around the apse are beautifully proportioned. The stained-glass windows, designed by Pierre Soulages (born in nearby Rodez), are abstract and luminous, replacing the original windows with translucent panels that fill the space with a soft, diffuse light. The effect is contemplative and modern within a profoundly ancient building. The reliquary statue of Sai

Walk the Medieval Village

Conques is tiny, with only 270 inhabitants, but every street is worth exploring. The medieval houses, built from the local sandstone with slate roofs, cascade down the hillside towards the abbey. The cobbled streets are steep and narrow. Small gardens, carved doorways, and the constant sound of the river below give the village a fairy-tale quality. The best time to see Conques is early morning or late evening, when the day visitors have left and the village belongs to the pilgrims and the few pe

See the Pont Romain

Below the village, a medieval bridge (called the Pont Romain, though it is not actually Roman) crosses the river Dourdou. The bridge is part of the GR65 route and the traditional entry or exit point for pilgrims. The view back up to the village from the bridge, with the abbey towers rising above the rooftops and the hillside covered in medieval houses, is one of the most iconic images of Le Chemin du Puy.

Camino Moment

Stay the Night

Many pilgrims pass through Conques in a few hours, arriving mid-afternoon and leaving the next morning. If you can, stay two nights and spend a full day here. Conques rewards time. The abbey is different at every hour as the light changes through Soulages' windows. The village is different in the morning (quiet, misty) and the evening (warm, golden). The gites and hotels serve excellent food using local ingredients. Many pilgrims who walk the entire Chemin du Puy say that Conques is the highligh
