About Grañón

Grañón is a small village in La Rioja on the Camino Francés, between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Redecilla del Camino. For pilgrims, it is the last village in La Rioja before crossing into Castilla y León, and it works well as a quieter overnight stop after Santo Domingo.

The village has a long Camino history and was once near a defensive castle built during the early medieval period. Its main sight is the Church of San Juan Bautista, which has an impressive 16th-century altarpiece and is closely tied to the village’s pilgrim identity. Grañón is also known for its parish albergue, one of the most memorable on the Camino, housed within the church complex.

For pilgrims today, Grañón has accommodation, bars, food options, and basic services, but it is still a small village. It is more limited than Santo Domingo de la Calzada, so it is worth checking supplies before staying or continuing. The atmosphere is quiet, local, and very Camino-focused.

The must-do in Grañón is the parish albergue experience if it suits your walking style. Pilgrims often sleep communally, share a meal, and take part in a simple evening reflection. Even if you do not stay, the Church of San Juan Bautista is worth a look before continuing toward Redecilla del Camino.
