Orisson is a small mountain refuge perched on the slopes of the Pyrenees, roughly 8 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the Napoleon route. It is the only accommodation available between Saint-Jean and Roncesvalles, making it an important stop for pilgrims who prefer to split the demanding first day.
The refuge has a private albergue with beds, meals, and a bar with a terrace offering spectacular mountain views. Booking ahead is essential during peak season as it fills quickly.
Orisson is not a town but a single establishment on the mountainside. Pilgrims who stop here face a shorter but still challenging second half to Roncesvalles the following day. Those who pass through use it as a coffee and rest stop before continuing the climb.
