Vila do Conde

Founded in 1318, this massive Gothic convent dominates the hilltop above the Rio Ave. The building is enormous and the church interior has fine carved stonework. The aqueduct that once supplied the convent with water stretches nearly 4 km and is one of the most impressive engineering structures in the region. You can see it from the Camino path as you approach the town.

Vila do Conde was a major shipbuilding centre during the Age of Discovery. The museum, housed in the old royal shipyard by the river, tells the story of Portuguese maritime expansion and the ships that made it possible. A full-scale replica of a 16th-century nau sits beside the museum. For a small town, the maritime heritage is extraordinary.

The bridge across the Rio Ave offers the best view of Vila do Conde. Looking back towards the town, the convent, the aqueduct, and the riverside buildings create a memorable skyline. Many pilgrims pause here for a photo. The town sits where the river meets the sea, and the light on the water is often beautiful.

Vila do Conde is a junction point between the Coastal and Central routes of the Camino Portugues. If you have been walking the coast and want to move inland, you can follow a connecting path from here to Rates, where you join the Central route. This is a strategic decision. The coast continues to be beautiful, but the Central route has more historic towns and traditional Camino infrastructure.

A small fortress at the mouth of the Rio Cavado, built in the 17th century to defend the estuary from pirates and invaders. The fortress sits near the lighthouse and the beach. It is compact but atmospheric, and the position at the river mouth gives good views along the coast in both directions.
