About This Stage
The shortest stage on the Coastal route, this is an easy half-day stroll along the Atlantic shore. The path follows wooden boardwalks and beach promenades through a string of small coastal communities, with the ocean visible for almost the entire walk.
The terrain is almost completely flat, making this the least physically demanding day on the route. The walking is pleasant and relaxed, with opportunities to stop at beach cafes along the way. The sandy boardwalks can be slow going in places, but the sea views compensate.
Povoa de Varzim is a popular Portuguese seaside resort with a lively atmosphere, excellent seafood restaurants, a casino, and a long sandy beach. The town has comprehensive services including supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and accommodation at every price point. The fishing quarter (Bairro Norte) retains traditional character.
