About Ventas de Narón

Ventas de Naron sits in the province of Lugo, in Galicia, on the Camino between Hospital da Cruz and Ligonde. The hamlet sits on the high ground east of Palas de Rei.

The site is historically significant for an early 9th-century battle. In 820, an Asturian Christian force defeated a Moorish raiding party here, during the reign of King Alfonso II, the same king who first formally pilgrimaged to Santiago. The Battle of Naron was a small but important engagement in the early Reconquista, helping to secure the Galician interior and the route to the newly discovered tomb of Saint James at Compostela. The name Ventas refers to medieval roadside inns or ventas that served pilgrims and travellers.

Services in Ventas de Naron are limited. There is an albergue and a bar-restaurant. There is no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
