La Casa de las Sonrisas, or "House of Smiles," is a small pilgrim-only albergue on the main street of Grañón, a quiet village in La Rioja sitting just before the border with Castile. It has been welcoming walkers since 2012 and runs on a donation basis, with communal meals included, making it one of the more affordable and community-oriented stops on this stretch of the Camino Francés.
The hostel accommodates up to 15 pilgrims across 7 rooms with low beds, and the atmosphere leans toward the relaxed and social. A communal dinner and breakfast, both by donation, give guests the chance to sit together at the end of a day's walking rather than scatter to separate restaurants. There is a garden, covered bike storage, and pets are welcome.
Grañón itself is worth a pause. The village has a medieval parish church, San Juan Bautista, that has long served pilgrims passing through, and the surrounding landscape of open meseta and vineyard country is characteristic of this transitional zone between La Rioja and Burgos. For pilgrims walking east to west, it is one of the last stops in La Rioja before crossing into Castile y León.
Note that the hostel is open from March through October and that management is set to change in 2026, so details may shift after that point. Check-in runs from 13:00 to 20:00, and reservations are accepted.
