This hostel serves pilgrims walking the Camino Primitivo, offering basic dormitory beds and shared facilities. It sits a short walk from the historic center of Salas, a town notable for its medieval castle and collegiate church.
Municipal Albergue
The Albergue de Peregrinos de Salas takes its name directly from the medieval town it serves. As a municipal hostel, it is operated by the local government to provide safe harbor for walkers traversing the Camino Primitivo. Situated near the Nonaya River in a residential neighborhood known as La Veiga, the building is a practical, modern facility established to accommodate the steady revival of foot traffic on the oldest recognized pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
While the physical hostel is contemporary, walkers resting here are bedding down in a town that has been a crucial waystation since the ninth century. King Alfonso II passed through this mountainous region on the first recorded pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint James. Salas later grew wealthy in the late Middle Ages under the influence of the powerful Valdés family. Fernando de Valdés Salas, a prominent sixteenth-century inquisitor and the founder of the University of Oviedo, is the most notable local historical figure. Pilgrims staying at the albergue are only a short walk from his family's imposing defensive tower and the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, which houses his meticulously carved alabaster mausoleum.
The albergue offers the fundamental comforts needed after the steep, demanding descent from the Sierra de Bodenaya. It features simple dormitory accommodation with bunk beds, communal bathrooms, and hot showers. A basic kitchen is available for those who wish to prepare their own meals, alongside a modest dining space and outdoor sinks for hand-washing laundry. Because it operates strictly within the municipal network, beds are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis to those carrying a pilgrim credential. If a volunteer hospitalero is not present at the door when you arrive, you will usually need to register and collect the keys at the local police station or the tourist office in the town center.
A surprising local detail for visitors to discover is the town's famous culinary export, the "Carajitos del Profesor." These rustic hazelnut cookies were invented in the early twentieth century by a local music teacher who ran a cafe. They have since become a favorite, high-energy staple for Camino walkers passing through.
When planning your afternoon, try to claim your bed early so you have daylight left to explore the historic center. Look closely at the Torre de los Valdés to spot the distinctive elevated stone archway that bridges the defensive tower directly to the neighboring palace. Stock up on food before the end of the day, as the trail out of Salas the next morning immediately plunges into a dense, unpopulated forest track along the Nonaya River, taking walkers past old stone mill ruins and a small waterfall.
