A municipal pilgrim-only albergue on Castrojeriz's Plaza Mayor, offering 35 dormitory beds for €9 per night, with a donation breakfast, free kitchen, and covered bike storage, open year-round since 2002.
Private Albergue
The Albergue Municipal de San Esteban sits in a converted building on Castrojeriz's Plaza Mayor, one of the more atmospheric main squares along the Camino Francés. Castrojeriz itself is a town with a long history tied to the pilgrimage route, stretching along a single main street beneath a ruined hilltop castle that dates back to Roman and later Visigothic occupation. The town was an important stop for medieval pilgrims, and that tradition continues today.
The hostel has been welcoming pilgrims since 2002 and is run by the municipality, with a longtime hospitalero named Paco known to many who have passed through. With 35 beds in a single large dormitory, it operates on the communal model typical of Camino albergues, and is open exclusively to pilgrims. A donation breakfast is offered, which is a relatively rare touch among municipal hostels and adds to the sense of hospitality the place is known for.
The Plaza Mayor location means pilgrims are well-placed to explore the town, which has a handful of churches worth visiting, including the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria with its notable Gothic cloister. The stage out of Castrojeriz the following morning involves a steep climb up the Alto de Mostelares, one of the more memorable ascents on the Meseta section of the route, making a good night's rest here worthwhile.
