Albergue del Monasterio de Santa Clara

The Convent of Santa Clara in Carrión de los Condes is a working Franciscan monastery that has stood in this Palencian town since the 13th century. The Poor Clares, the female order founded by Saint Clare of Assisi alongside Saint Francis, have maintained a continuous presence here for centuries, and the convent remains an active religious community today.

For pilgrims walking the Camino Francés, the convent operates one of the more characterful albergues along this stretch of the route. Accommodation is managed by the nuns themselves, and the setting gives the stay a contemplative quality that distinguishes it from municipal or private hostels. Dormitories use low beds and range in size from small two-person rooms to larger shared spaces. Private rooms are also available, which is relatively uncommon among pilgrim-focused albergues.

At 6:00 PM the sisters offer guided tours of the monastery, and evening Mass follows at 7:00 PM during summer months. The attached museum is worth time if you have it: alongside religious paintings and sculpture, it holds several thematic collections including a notable assembly of nativity scenes gathered over the years by the community. The convent also issues the pilgrim credential for a small fee, useful for those who need a stamp or are starting their documentation here.

Carrión de los Condes itself was an important stop on the medieval pilgrimage route, and the town retains several Romanesque churches and historical sites. The convent sits near the entrance to town, about 100 metres from the main road.
