A privately run albergue open to pilgrims from Easter through October, offering dormitory beds and private rooms with kitchen access, laundry, and a garden, centrally located on the Camino route through Atapuerca.
Private Albergue
Albergue El Peregrino sits right on the Camino de Santiago route through Atapuerca, a village that draws visitors for reasons far older than any medieval pilgrimage. The Sierra de Atapuerca hills just outside the village contain cave systems where archaeologists have uncovered some of the oldest known human remains in Europe, dating back over a million years. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage designation and has genuinely reshaped scientific understanding of early human presence on the continent. Walking through this small settlement, pilgrims are passing through terrain that has seen human activity longer than almost anywhere else in Europe.
The hostel opened in 2005 and operates as a private, pilgrim-only albergue run by Rocío. It offers 30 dormitory beds across six shared rooms, with five-person bedrooms keeping things relatively uncrowded. There are also private double rooms for those wanting more comfort after a long day on the trail. The facilities are practical and well-suited to pilgrim needs: a free kitchen with microwave and refrigerator, washer and dryer, individual lockers, and a bicycle shelter for those doing the Camino by bike. A garden provides outdoor space to rest.
The albergue is open from Easter through the end of October, with check-in from 13:00 and doors closing at 22:00. Reservations are accepted, which is worth considering given the village's small size and the steady flow of pilgrims passing through on the way to Burgos.
