Albergue Municipal Casa del Cubo

The Casa del Cubo y de los Lerma sits in a 16th-century stone building tucked behind Burgos Cathedral, one of the finest Gothic structures in Spain. The building itself has genuine historical character, and its location in the old town means pilgrims wake up in the heart of one of the Camino Francés's most significant stopping points.

The hostel is municipally owned but run by the Association of Friends of the Burgos Way, staffed by volunteer hospitaleros. It opened in 2008 and operates exclusively for pilgrims, with 120 beds spread across six dormitories on multiple floors. The compartmentalized layout gives the space a bit more structure than a single open room, which many walkers appreciate after days in more chaotic hostels.

Burgos itself is worth more than a quick overnight. The cathedral holds the tomb of El Cid, the legendary Castilian military leader, and its spires are visible from miles along the meseta approach into the city. The old town, including the street this hostel sits on, retains a strong medieval atmosphere. Pilgrims also face a practical milestone here: the long, exposed stretch of the Castilian meseta lies ahead, and many use Burgos as a resupply and rest point before that crossing.

The hostel does not accept reservations, so arrival time matters, particularly in peak season. Credentials (pilgrim passports) can be stamped and purchased here for three euros for those who need one.
