Albergue Municipal de San Estéban

The municipal pilgrim hostel of San Esteban occupies a former medieval church on Castrojeriz's Plaza Mayor, making it one of the more atmospheric places to sleep on the entire French Way. Pilgrims bed down beneath the vaulted stone ceiling of a building that has stood since 1220, a fact that tends to sink in once the lights go out and the space quiets down.

The church of San Esteban functioned for centuries before falling into disrepair and closing in the 19th century. It sat unused for decades until the local council and the regional government of Castile and León saw potential in the ruin. After a careful restoration, it reopened in 2002 as a combined cultural space and pilgrim hostel, giving the building a new purpose while preserving its essential character.

Access is restricted to pilgrims holding a valid credential, keeping the atmosphere genuinely tied to the Camino rather than general tourism. The hostel sits right on the route itself, which passes through Castrojeriz from east to west, so arrivals and departures simply flow in and out with the day's walking rhythm. For anyone doing the French Way, it is a straightforward choice: central, reasonably priced as a public hostel, and housed in a building that is interesting in its own right.
