Albergue parroquial San Juan Bautista

The parish hostel of San Juan Bautista sits inside the church of the same name in Grañón, a small village on the Camino Francés that marks the boundary between La Rioja and Castile. The sleeping quarters are located in the upper floor of the medieval church itself, directly above the nave, giving the space an unusual character that few pilgrim accommodations can match.

The hostel operates entirely on a donativo basis and is run by the parish under the care of Don Jesús and a rotating community of volunteer hospitaleros. It holds 36 pilgrims on sleeping mats on the floor, expanding to around 60 spaces in summer. The lack of beds is deliberate in a sense: the stripped-back setup reflects the hostel's ethos, which prioritizes community over comfort. Pilgrims sleep alongside one another in the same room, often from a wide mix of nationalities and backgrounds.

What sets Grañón apart from many stops on the Camino is the rhythm of the evening. A communal dinner is prepared and shared together, followed by a short prayer service. Participation is not mandatory, but most pilgrims find the experience genuinely moving, particularly those who have been walking for several days and are open to something more reflective. The hostel has built a quiet reputation over the years as one of the more spiritually resonant places to stay on the French Way, and many pilgrims name it as a highlight of the entire journey.

The village of Grañón itself is modest, with fewer than 100 inhabitants, but its position at the regional border gives it a certain historical weight. The church dates to the late medieval period and the tower offers views across the grain-covered meseta stretching toward Burgos.
