Albergue Ultreia is a pilgrim-only hostel in Castrojeriz run by long-distance pilgrims, notable for its 18th-century wine cellar with 14th and 15th-century remains, wine and herbal liqueur tastings, and a garden foot-soaking fountain.
Private Albergue
Albergue Ultreia sits right on the Camino Francés as it passes through Castrojeriz, a town strung along a single road beneath a ruined hilltop castle in the Burgos province of Castile and León. The hostel has been welcoming pilgrims since 2014 and is run privately by Olga and José.
What sets Ultreia apart from a standard pilgrim hostel is the depth of the experience on offer. The hospitaleros are long-distance pilgrims themselves, and the building contains an 18th-century wine cellar with structural remains dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Visitors can tour the cellar, see a working wine press with a demonstration of how it was traditionally used, and sample homemade herbal liqueur alongside wines from the Ribera del Arlanza designation. It is a genuinely local touch that goes beyond the usual stamp-and-sleep routine.
The practical side is well covered too. The hostel has 26 dormitory beds and four private rooms, accepts reservations, and is open from late March through October. There is a garden with a cold-water foot-soaking fountain, which after the long climb out of Burgos and the exposed meseta walking leading into Castrojeriz tends to be exactly what pilgrims need. Meals are available on site, and pets are welcome in dormitories for a small surcharge.
