Albergue Vía Minera

Albergue Vía Minera sits beside the village church in Cardeñuela Riopico, a small settlement on the Camino Francés just a few kilometers before the climb to the Cruz de Matagrande and the descent into Burgos. The hostel takes its name from the Vía Minera, a historic route used to transport coal and other minerals from the mining areas of the Castilian interior, reflecting the industrial heritage of this stretch of countryside that often goes unnoticed by pilgrims focused on reaching the city.

Opened in 2012 and run by Carlos and Jhoana, the hostel offers 50 beds across five dormitories, along with two private rooms, and has made a point of including accessibility features for pilgrims with reduced mobility, which is relatively uncommon among smaller rural albergues. Pets and bicycles are both welcome, and in summer a swimming pool is available, which can be a genuine draw after a long day on the meseta.

The bar-restaurant serves a community dinner for 13 euros and breakfast for 4.50 euros, making it straightforward to eat well without going elsewhere. The village itself is quiet, and being 150 meters off the main road, the albergue has a calm atmosphere that suits pilgrims who want a lower-key stop before tackling the approach to Burgos.
