About this property
Gîte Ultreïa sits on the Rue de la Citadelle, the steep cobbled street in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port that has funnelled pilgrims toward Spain for centuries. The building itself is part of the old fortified town, which was established as a waypoint on the Camino Francés during the medieval pilgrimage boom and remains one of the most significant starting points on the entire route today. Walking this street, pilgrims pass beneath the same stone archways and past the same thick walls that travellers have navigated since the 12th century.
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, whose name means "Saint John at the foot of the pass," sits at the base of the Pyrenees just before the demanding crossing into Spain via the Route Napoléon or the alternative Valcarlos valley route. The town belongs to the French Basque Country, and that cultural identity is visible everywhere, from the architecture to the language on the shop signs.
Staying here means sleeping where the Camino truly begins in earnest. The hostel operates with pilgrims in mind rather than tourists: guests bring their own sleeping bag and towel, and beds are made up with a fitted sheet and pillow cover, with blankets available on request. Dinner is vegetarian and served communally at 20:00, which makes for a natural opportunity to meet fellow walkers before the road begins. Breakfast runs as a buffet from 30 minutes before sunrise until 08:00, timed around an early departure. Gluten-free options are available with advance notice.
