About this property
The Bairro Alto Hotel occupies a restored 18th-century palace on one of Lisbon's most recognizable squares, Praça de Luís de Camões, at the edge of the Chiado neighborhood. The building dates to the Pombaline reconstruction period following the 1755 earthquake, and the hotel has preserved much of its original architectural character while adding contemporary interiors.
The location puts guests at a genuinely useful crossroads. Chiado, with its bookshops, cafes, and the historic A Brasileira coffee house, is immediately to the north. The Bairro Alto neighborhood, Lisbon's old bohemian quarter known for its fado houses and nightlife, begins just uphill. The square itself is named for Luís de Camões, Portugal's most celebrated poet, and his statue stands at its center, a familiar meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
The hotel's rooftop terrace has become something of a landmark in its own right, offering views over the terracotta rooftops toward the Tagus and the Cristo Rei statue across the water. The terrace bar is open to non-guests as well, making it a reasonable stop even for walkers not staying here.
For pilgrims and long-distance walkers arriving in or departing from Lisbon, this part of the city is well connected to the starting points of the Caminho Português and other routes heading north, and the Chiado area offers plentiful options for resupply and rest.
