About This Stage
A transitional stage connecting Gijon to Aviles through a mix of coastal, industrial, and rural terrain. The route leaves Gijon through suburban areas, passing near the airport before entering more rural landscape with rolling terrain approaching Aviles.
The walking is moderate with some hilly sections. After the airport area, the terrain becomes greener with views over the Asturian coastal plain. The Castillo de San Martin dominates the mouth of the Nalon River, though it is privately owned and cannot be visited.
Aviles is a historic town with a beautifully restored medieval centre of arcaded streets and palace facades. The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, designed by the legendary Brazilian architect at age 103, is a striking modernist complex on the estuary. The old town's Iglesia de San Nicolas, the Plaza de Espana, and the excellent local cuisine (especially fish and seafood) make Aviles a rewarding stop.
Terrain: Urban exit, industrial areas, coastal paths, rural lanes, town streets
