Stage 17 of 35

Llanes → Ribadesella / Ribeseya

30 km | 8-11 hours | +998m / -988m

About This Stage

A long stage following the Asturian coast through dramatic limestone scenery to Ribadesella. The terrain alternates between clifftop walking, beach crossings, and passages through the unique karst landscape with its sinkholes, caves, and rock formations.

The route passes through the Bufones de Pria, a spectacular section where Atlantic waves force air through underground channels, creating dramatic blowholes. The coastal scenery is exceptional throughout, with the Picos de Europa visible inland on clear days.

Ribadesella (Ribeseya in Asturian) is a charming town divided by the Sella River estuary. The old town on the east bank has the Tito Bustillo Cave, containing prehistoric paintings rivalling Altamira. The west bank has the beach and modern town. Good services and accommodation available.

Terrain: Coastal paths, karst landscape, rural lanes, beach sections, river valley approach
