Muros de Nalón → Soto de Luiña

15.5 km | 5-6 hours | +945m / -1058m

About This Stage

A short but winding stage through the western Asturian countryside, passing one of the region's hidden architectural treasures. At El Pito, the Palacio de los Selgas (19th century) houses paintings by Goya in its interior, surrounded by extensive French and English-style gardens. The Camino does not pass through Cudillero, but a worthwhile detour (3-4km) leads to this famous fishing village, an amphitheatre of colourful houses cascading down to a tiny harbour.

The route approaches the coast at La Concha de Artedo before climbing through small villages to Soto de Luina. The terrain has frequent moderate ups and downs but no extreme sections.

Soto de Luina's heritage ensemble was recognised as UNESCO World Heritage in 2015 as part of the Caminos del Norte. The 18th-century Iglesia de Santa Maria has a stone at its entrance that historically prohibited entry to the Vaqueiros (interior mountain people). The Casa Rectoral, formerly a pilgrim hospital (Hospital de El Rosario), now houses the albergue. Historical records show the hospital employed a hospitalera (required to be a widow or single woman without children) who served pilgrims water, bread, salt, and hot broth. The Molino de Goro watermill is believed to be over 400 years old.

Terrain: Steep coastal climbs, cliff paths, forest trails, rural lanes
